How to get a "FEIN"

Federal Employer Identification Number

To provide for fast issuance of an Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), the IRS has set up Tele-TIN Units at each service center. To use this service, you need only to complete a Form SS-4 and call the Tele-TIN unit.

How to get a Form SS-4

If you need a Form SS-4 you can get it online from the Internal Revenue Service or if you have Adobe on your system, you can download it here Form SS-4

The basics for getting an FEIN over the phone:

• First, be sure to complete the Form SS-4 before you call! An incomplete form will significantly slow down the process.
• Second, call your regions IRS Service Center Tele-TIN unit (phone numbers are listed below). They will prompt you through the procedure.
• Third, mail or FAX the SIGNED and DATED Form SS-4 to the IRS immediately (within 24 hours) after the FEIN is issued. The FEIN may be invalidated if the IRS doesn't receive the Form SS-4.

Use Tele-TIN for emergencies and requests that must be expedited.

Don't use Tele-TIN for out of the country employer requests or for anything other than an FEIN request.

Important! The Form SS-4 must be signed by one of the following:

• The individual if the entity is an individual;
• The president, vice-president or other principal officer of a corporation;
• An authorized member or officer having knowledge of its affairs for a partnership or other unincorporated organization; or,
• The fiduciary, trustee or administrator of a trust or estate.
